Gasification and Core Facility
GCF001: Gasification performance of Australian coals - Pilot Gasifier Trials
This project will provide the first coherent set of gasification performance data for a suite of Australian coals (benchmarking, validation and applications data to support and extend Australian gasification R&D and determine criteria for coal tests for gasification applications). It will identify any practical gasification or 'downstream' syngas issues (coal and slag behaviour and impurities, contaminants, sampling and analysis issues). This project will also provide performance data for flow sheet models and reference designs for 'standard' and 'low emissions' technology systems (cost and performance assessments and impact of cLET technology improvements being developed under gas cleaning, gas processing and gas separation programme streams).
GCF002: National low emissions gasification research facility
This is an initiative of the cLET Board sub-committee aimed at developing a proposal to build and operate a 5MWth, national low emission gasification research and test facility for black coal. The purpose of the facility would be to undertake ongoing research critical to improving our understanding of the gasification performance of Australian coals, to improve gasification technologies for our coals, to understand long term gasifier performance issues and to provide a means for the larger scale pilot and pre-commercial testing of key enabling technology modules for gas cleaning, gas separation and gas processing (developed by cLET and others) for applications in advanced IGCC power plants, H2 burning processes, fuel cells and gas to liquid processes.
The national pilot facility is seen as a critical step for acquiring and building core national competencies as well as in providing a technology platform for the development of advanced coal based systems to produce low emission and zero carbon energy carriers. In addition to identifying the technology and costs, the project will also identify the stakeholders and support necessary to build and operate the national facility.
GCF003: Syngas generator for the cLET research program
This project will address the design, construction and operation of a small pressurised, wet and dry feed, pilot syngas generator unit. The unit rated at a 0.2 MWth capacity will be capable of processing approximately 20-30 kg/h of black coal for the primary purpose of providing contaminant laden streams for the testing and development of technology modules for gas cleaning, gas separation and gas processing being developed by cLET. The pilot unit will also support some technolgoy learining on the gasification performance and slag behaviour of Australian black coals under wet and dry feed conditions.
