Al Gore and IPCC share the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 was jointly awarded to former US Vice-president Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The CEO of cLET, Dr. Kelly Thambimuthu, a coordinating lead author in the writing of the special assessment report on "CO2 Capure and Storage" is a contributer to the work done by the IPCC recognised by this award. IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri accepted the award on behalf of the IPCC in a ceremony held in Oslo, Norway on 10 December 2007.
CATO Mid Term Review
The CEO of cLET, Dr. Kelly Thambimuthu, chaired the mid-term review by international technical experts of CATO, the CO2 Capture, Transport and Storage program in the Netherlands. The review took place on 29 and 30 August 2007, in Utrecht.
The comments of the Committee were very positive and constructive. Some quotes of the Committee in the report are:
"CATO has developed into a successful research network in the Netherlands and has 'de facto' become the Dutch national CCS program. It should be noted that this was not the original intention, but through the activity CATO has initiated, CCS projects in the Netherlands are now highly relevant to the new national Dutch policy on climate change - where CCS is recognised as an important strategy to mitigate climate change. CATO is therefore a 'gift to government' and has established a much needed basis of a national capability in CCS."
"CATO is one of the few national European CCS programs covering the entire CCS chain. The active participation of industry, research institutes universities and NGO's makes CATO a powerful consortium which is similar in nature to the highlly influential Zero Emissions Power (ZEP), EU Technology Platform."
"Continuity of CATO will be particularly important in light of the need for a skills base for the application of CCS in the Netherlands. It should, therefore, provide a focus for the CCS research and technology development and be complementary to other Dutch actions in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources."
The Review Team also supported the proposal from the current CATO project to change the balance between basic R&D and applied research in the follow-up of CATO. "There should be strong activity supporting implementation of first generation technology, but also still maintain clear activity towards the provision of second generation technologies and beyond."
